War Machine (AKA G.I. WAR) (2009)

cast : Robert Amstler
director : Rene Perez

Action

A terrorist threat rises from the third world, and its target is the United States of America. A fanatical would-be dictator devises a plan to overthrow the American government, and it’s a plan that just might work. The terrorist Commander calls on the worlds underprivileged to rise up and create an unstoppable army, promising land and work to any family from any part of the world who sends a young man to fight in his so called liberation army.

The terrorist Commander establishes a base in a tropical Caribbean paradise which points like a dagger at America’s throat. With only days before the the first elements land on U.S. soil, the American government discovers that the terrorist Commander plans on sending a freighter filled with thousands of small arms weapons, cannons and tanks to a U.S. shipping port. Knowing that the port authorities might not find the exact freighter in time to stop it, they must devise a new plan to find the freighter before it leaves the Caribbean.

With no time to loose, the U.S immediately forms an elite strike force to engage the new terrorist regime before it can land on U.S. soil. Their mission: stop it there before we have to stop it here. But the enemy Commander is well aware of American tactics and has his own elite commando team led by an assassin from the world’s last ninja clan. The US team must survive enemy attacks and destroy the Commanders weapons.

It’s a seemingly impossible task. But the ninja is attacking no standard Special Forces unit. They are the best of the best. American intelligence is well aware that every Garden of Eden has its snakes and the American team is prepared to fight fire with fire. It’s guarded by its own fearless warrior, a black clad ninja, an expert in many forms martial arts- hand to hand, sword, and fire arms. What ensues is a rock and roll fueled chess game of strike and counter-strike, from golden beaches and lush rainforests to densely packed and brightly painted urban slums as the American Strike Force encounter and destroy enemy troops, human traffickers, and eventually end up in an all out battle for their lives in a heavily defended enemy fortress.

Lucky Bastard (2009)

director : Everett Lewis

Gay & Lesbian

From Everett Lewis, the acclaimed writer-director of the art-house hits Luster and The Natural History of Parking Lots, comes an arousing and dark-edged story of a passionate affair set amidst the backroom bars, dark alleys and sordid hotel rooms of modern-day Los Angeles–a city where even if you’re lucky enough to have it all, it doesn’t mean you know exactly what you want.

Rusty (Patrick Tatten, The Soloist) is a successful architect with to-die-for pecs, bulging biceps and a killer smile. When his stodgy boyfriend leaves town, Rusty has a chance encounter with a handsome though seedy drifter, Denny (Dale Dymkoski, TV’s “Law and Order: SVU”). Blinded by Denny’s good looks, vulnerability and hustler charm, Rusty begins an intense, steamy relationship ruled by long-dormant passions. However, as Denny’s control over Rusty strengthens, it soon becomes clear that Rusty–now on a seductive ride of sex and drugs–must decide what it is he truly wants.

Lucky Bastard is an edgy, sensual and salacious exploration of youthful indiscretion, sexual indulgence and the high stakes of attraction–a story that rings true to anyone who’s ever fallen for the wrong guy for all the right reasons.

Hanger (2009)

Horror

From Ryan Nicholson, the acclaimed writer-director of the cult hit Gutterballs, comes this gruesome horror tale in which revenge is sweet and sick and twisted and definitely served cold–a balls-to-the-wall story of vengeance and murder that rises to new heights of perverse action and macabre behavior.

Eighteen years ago, nine-months-pregnant Rose (B-Movie Hall of Fame acting legend Debbie Rochon), a wrong-side-of-the-tracks prostitute, was killed when her pimp gave her an abortion with a hanger. Now, the deformed, surviving child (Nathan Dashwood, TV’s “Smallville”), who was thrown in the dumpster, left for dead and mockingly called Hanger, is about to settle the score – and any street trash, sex degenerate or murderous pimp better beware.

Reminiscent of low-budget classics from the like of directors Lloyd Kaufman (who appears here as Melvina the Tranny) and Herschell Gordon Lewis, Hanger carves a brutal and tasty slice of blood and guts in which no one is safe, no matter how fast they can run or how loud they can scream.

Fighting Words (2007)

cast : C. Thomas Howell (E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial / The Outsiders / The Hitcher), Fred Willard (WALL·E / Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy / Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle), Fred Williamson (Starsky & Hutch / From Dusk Till Dawn / MASH), Tara D’Agostino, Jeff Stearns
director : E. Paul Edwards
executive producer : Robert Zaytoun
producer : Alan Roberts, Paul Ferguson

Drama, Romance, Slam Poetry

“An engrossing tale about the surprisingly cutthroat world of competitive poetry. Edwards brings alive this special world of competitive poetry along with creating unapologetically intelligent key characters. The stars are solidly supported by C. Thomas Howell as Jake’s ferociously unscrupulous rival; Williamson as Gabriel, Jake’s no-nonsense mentor; Michael Parks as one of Gabriel’s regular customers, unscrupulous behind a garrulous old codger facade; Albert as Marni’s overly prissy boss; and Fred Willard as the witty, energetic host of an important poetry slam. Edwards proves a skilled writer of depth and ingenuity – e.g., he punctuates the progress of Jake and Marni’s story with apt recitations by actual poets of their work – and his unpretentious style builds to a climactic sequence of deeply involving suspense.” – Kevin Thomas, LA Times

“A loquacious recasting of the underdog Rocky tale set against a fresh, contemporary backdrop, Fighting Words is about one man’s quest to locate the requisite courage and discipline to match his passion”. – Brent Simon, LA Film Critics Association

“…exciting and innovative… Brimming with the same passion for wordplay, expression and connectivity that its characters display, Fighting Words features fine work from a diverse cast…” – Cinema Art Magazine

“…a treasure. Solid film marking the resurgence of C. Thomas Howell…” – Digital Pimp

“…the poetry in Street Poet is actually pretty good, the best being a bit from Howell…” – C. Null – Filmcritic.com

cast : Dermot Mulroney (Flash of Genius / Burn After Reading / Zodiac), James Cromwell (Spider-Man 3 / Surrogates / I, Robot / W.), Martha Plimpton
director : Sean Meredith
producer : Sean Meredith, Paul Zaloom

Comedy, Animation

Melding the seemingly disparate traditions of apocalyptic live-action graphic novel and charming Victoria-era toy theater, Dante’s Inferno is a subversive, darkly satirical update of the original 14th century literary classic. Retold with the use of intricately hand-drawn paper puppets and miniature sets, and without the use of CGI effects, this unusual travelogue takes viewers on a tour of hell. And what we find there, looks a lot like the modern world. Sporting a hoodie and a hang-over from the previous night’s debauchery, Dante (voiced by Dermot Mulroney) wakes to find he is lost – physically and metaphorically – in a strange part of town. He asks the first guy he sees for some help: The ancient Roman poet Virgil (voiced by James Cromwell), wearing a mullet and what looks like a brown bathrobe. Having no one else to turn to, Dante’s quickly convinced that his only means for survival is to follow Virgil voyage down, down through the depths of Hell.

Shifting into serious denial mode, Paul misses their final departure, but ultimately faces the truth that the Fabers are gone and aren’t coming back.

When Paul’s friend Russell (Anthony Clark) convinces him to “get back out in the world,” Paul ventures out to play with some kids at the local playground. Inspired to find creative ways to maintain the youthful exuberance he feels, Paul begins to explore every opportunity that might afford him contact with children: working in a toy store, babysitting, advertising himself as a nanny (aka “manny”), even considering adoption.

Watching Paul’s natural, playful chemistry with the children, one local mother, Maggie Butler (Kathy Najimy), wonders who this amazing “Super Dad” is. Upon further investigation, she determines that maybe Paul is up to no good and decides to rally her neighbors to take action.

Thus begins a comic clash of suspicion, fear, and misunderstanding in this “not-quite-black” comedy. Truly, the suburbs are about to get hysterical.
